  • Galls of the Silk Button Gall Wasp {Neuroterus numismalis} on the underside of a fallen oak leaf. A single wasp will emerge from each gall. Neuroterus numismalis has two generations per year, the first sexual and the second agamic. These 'silk buttons' are caused by the agamic generation whilst the sexual generation gives rise to a different form of gall known as 'blister galls'. Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, UK.   • A male harvestman {Opiliones} in his mud nest constucted on the side of a fallen rainforest tree. Females actively court the male in his nest where they mate and deposit eggs. Eggs from several different females may be deposited in the nest. The male then guards the eggs from predators such as ants and keeps it clean, eating fungal hypae that could threaten the eggs.
