AH_Batesian Wasp Mimics_.jpg
A German Wasp {Vespula germanica} compared to five Batesian mimics. None of the five wasp mimics can sting, but by appearing similar to a wasp, are avoided by many potential predators. All five mimics are European species that live alongside the German Wasp. Clockwise from top left: 1- German Wasp {Vespula germanica}, 2 - Hoverfly {Syrphus ribesii}, 3 - Hoverfly {Chrysotoxum festivum}, 4 - Wasp Beetle {Clytus arietis}, 5 - Sawfly {Tenthredo sp.}, 6 - Hoverfly {Helophilus pendulus}. All photographed in the field on a white background.
