European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are crucial to the Breckland ecosystem. Low growing, less vigerous plants can be quickly outcompeted by grasses and other more vigerous plants. Grazing by rabbits keeps the sward low and allows these smaller plants to thrive. The sandy soil turned over by their burrowing also provides an important habitat for a range of plants and invertebrates. Back from the Brink 'Shifting Sands' project, Suffolk, UK. July.
