AH_Phoretic Mites on a Dor Beetle_2.jpg

twitterlinkedinfacebook

Hitching a lift on the iridescent undercarriage of a Dor Beetle (Geotrupes sp.), these Phoretic Mites (Poecilochirus sp.) travel with the beetle between the dung piles on which it feeds. The mites disembark and eat fly eggs on the dung, potentially keeping down the number of flies that can otherwise become a nuisance in livestock settings. Wigwell, Derbyshire. October. Focus stacked image.
