AH_Metalmark Moth Brenthia Jumping Spider Mimic Borneo_2415.jpg
Metalmark moth (Brenthia sp.). This moth imitates jumping spiders. If you squint at the image (simualting the lower resolution vision of a jumping spider that has spotted the moth), the stripes on the wings resemble legs and the spots on the wings resemble eyes, complete with catchlights. It is thought that this puts off jumping spiders from attacking as they would rather avoid a risky confrontation with another jumping spider. The photographer also observed the moth moving like a jumping spider, darting around the leaf in quick bursts. Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. October.
